In light of the latest development of the Novel Coronavirus outbreak and in accordance with the University’s preventive measures, the four Russian Moments concerts with pianists Konstantin Lifschitz and Alexei Volodin on 14-16 February will be cancelled. Detailed refund arrangements will be sent to ticket holders in due course. Thank you for your support and understanding.

This event is part of the Russian Moments series.

MEDTNER Sonata-Ballada, Op. 27
RACHMANINOV Variations on a Theme of CorelliOp. 42
3 Pieces for Piano in C major, Op. 59
SHOSTAKOVICH Piano Sonata No. 2 in B minor, Op. 61

The second recital uncovers the lesser-performed gems by four Russian titans: Medtner’s Sonata-Ballada illustrates Christ’s temptation in the wilderness; Rachmaninov’s Variations on a Theme of Corelli, based on the famous La Folia, is one of the few unrecorded works by himself; Prokofiev’s 3 Pieces for Piano, composed upon his return to the Soviet Union, reveals a change in musical style for greater warmth of expression; Shostakovich’s relatively subtle second piano sonata is considered almost a counterbalance to the structural extensiveness of his symphonic works.
