Programme

This event is part of the Russian Moments series.

MEDTNER Sonata-Ballada, Op. 27
RACHMANINOV Variations on a Theme of CorelliOp. 42
Intermission
PROKOFIEV
3 Pieces for Piano in C major, Op. 59
SHOSTAKOVICH Piano Sonata No. 2 in B minor, Op. 61

The second recital uncovers the lesser-performed gems by four Russian titans: Medtner’s Sonata-Ballada illustrates Christ’s temptation in the wilderness; Rachmaninov’s Variations on a Theme of Corelli, based on the famous La Folia, is one of the few unrecorded works by himself; Prokofiev’s 3 Pieces for Piano, composed upon his return to the Soviet Union, reveals a change in musical style for greater warmth of expression; Shostakovich’s relatively subtle second piano sonata is considered almost a counterbalance to the structural extensiveness of his symphonic works.
