Schubert's 12 Piano Sonatas with Paul Lewis (Part 4 of 4)

Programme

This concert is part of  ‘Schubert’s 12 Piano Sonatas with Paul Lewis‘ Series.

Piano Sonata No. 19 in C minor, D. 958
Piano Sonata No. 20 in A major, D. 959
Piano Sonata No. 21 in B-flat major, D. 960

“Schubert’s completed piano sonatas take us on a unique and heart-wrenching journey through the last 12 years of his life. From the charming lyricism of the early sonatas to the transcendent creativity of the late masterpieces, via harrowing moments of despair as his health started to decline. His sonatas express with directness and sincerity some of the most fundamental elements of human experience—longing, consolation, despair, joy, loss, nostalgia, and hope. In our time, his music is as essential and poignant as ever.” —Paul Lewis

Continuing the journey embarked last February, celebrated British pianist Paul Lewis returns to HKU to unfold the final two chapters of his Schubert Sonata Cycle, including the last three sonatas completed in the composer’s final months. Lauded by The New York Times as “one of today’s finest exponents of Schubert”, Paul will depict the composer’s final torment and transition from spiritual despair to unperturbed transcendence.
