黃日珩 Apollo Wong
A native of Hong Kong, Apollo Wong is a conductor, operatic bass and educator. He has sung operatic and musical roles including the Superintendent Budd and Bottom in Britten’s Albert Herring and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Ariodate in Handel’s Serse, Frère Laurent in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, Zuniga in Bizet’s Carmen, Barone Trombonok in Rossini’s Il Viaggio a Reims, Colline and Simone in Puccini’s La Bohème and Gianni Schicchi, Don Alfonso, Sarastro and Masetto in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Die Zauberflöte and Don Giovanni, Geppetto in Valtinoni’s Pinocchio, and Javert in Les Misérables, among others. He also sang in the world premiere productions of Chan Hing-yan’s Heart of Coral (Lu Xun), Datong (Kang You Wei) and Ghost Love (Moonlight), and Jeffrey Ching’s Before Brabant (King Oryant/Markes). Amongst his concert and oratorio repertoire, he has notably both sung the bass solos and conducted Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 “Symphony of a Thousand” Verdi’s Messa da Requiem and Faurè’s Requiem. Other concert repertoire include bass solos in Bach’s St. John Passion and St. Matthew Passion, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem, and Schubert’s Winterreise (with Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company), among others. He has sung under conductors such as Yves Abel, Paolo Olmi, Renato Palumbo, Joseph Rescigno, Helmuth Rilling and Francois- Xavier Roth.
Educated in Los Angeles and Berlin, Wong has won first places in Palm Springs Opera Guild Vocal competition and the Pasadena Opera Guild Vocal Scholarship.
Being an active conductor and educator, Wong has recently won first place at the Hong Kong Choral Conducting Competition and Asia Pacific Youth Choir Award. He is currently Music Director of The Learners Chorus and The Learners Orchestra, Chorus Master of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Chorus, and conductor of the St. Paul’s Co-educational College and Hong Kong Children’s Choir senior choirs. Being recognized as an inspiring choral and orchestral builder, from community to professional ensembles, he has introduced a broad variety of choral and orchestral music to the public: from Magnificat by Bach and Rutter, Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem, Gounod’s St. Cecilia Mass, Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna, Lully’s Te Deum, Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang, Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor and Requiem, Rossini’s Messa di Gloria and Stabat Mater, Tallis’ Spem in Alium, Verdi’s Quattro pezzi sacri; to Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection”, Martin’s Mass for Double Choir, Pärt’s Credo, Poulenc’s Gloria, Prauliņš Missa Rigensis, Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky, Rachmaninoff’s The Bells, and Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms.
He has been the chorus master for conductors such as David Atherton, Lorin Maazel, Helmuth Rilling, Tan Dun, Edo de Waart and Jaap van Zweden; and assistant conductor in operas Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Puccini’s La Bohème, Gianni Schicchi, Turandot and Verdi’s Aida.
黄日珩為香港土生土長指揮家、男低音歌唱家及教育家。曾演出的歌劇及音樂劇角色包括布列頓《艾拔賀寧》的警官布特和《仲夏夜之夢》的博托姆、韓德爾《橋王闖情關》的阿里奧達、古諾《羅密歐與朱麗葉》的羅倫斯神甫、比才《卡門》的蘇尼加、羅西尼《蘭斯城之旅》的曹邦諾伯爵、普契尼《波希米亞生涯》與《賈尼・斯基基》的柯林尼及西蒙、莫札特《女人皆如此》、《魔笛》與《唐‧喬望尼》的阿方索先生、薩拉斯妥及馬賽塔、華田朗尼《木偶奇遇記》的木匠、《孤星淚》的賈維等。他亦參與於陳慶恩教授筆下的世界首演項目, 於歌劇《蕭紅》、《大同》及《鬼戀》分別飾演魯迅、康有為及月光,以及莊祖欣的《天鵝武士前傳》音樂會飾演柯里安及馬卡斯兩角。音樂會及聖樂曲目方面,他曾於馬勒第八交響曲《千人交響曲》、威爾第《安魂彌撒曲》及佛瑞《安魂曲》擔任指揮及男低音獨唱。他演出過的其他男低音獨唱曲目包括巴赫《聖約翰受難曲》及《聖馬太受難曲》、貝多芬《第九交響樂曲》、布拉姆斯《德意志安魂曲》、莫札特《安魂曲》、舒伯特《冬之旅》(與香港城市當代舞蹈團聯合演出)等。他曾與多位指揮家合作,包括阿貝爾、包奧明、柏林保、雷辛約、瑞霖及洛凡西等。
黃氏先後於美國洛杉磯及德國柏林受教育,曾贏得棕櫚泉歌劇協會聲樂比賽冠軍及柏薩廸納歌劇協會獎學金。
作為指揮家及教育家,黃氏於最近香港合唱指揮比賽贏得冠軍及亞太青年合唱團大獎。現任學士合唱團及學士管弦樂團音樂總監、香港管弦樂團合唱團團長、聖保羅男女中學及香港兒童合唱團高級組合唱團指揮。從業餘到專業樂團,他作為合唱及樂團建造者的啟發性備受肯定,並向公眾推廣多元化的合唱及交響音樂:巴赫和盧特的《尊主頌》、布拉姆斯《德意志安魂曲》、古諾《聖西紹爾莊嚴彌撒曲》、勞律森《玫瑰香頌》、盧利《感恩讚》、孟德爾遜《讚美頌歌》、莫札特《C小調大彌撒曲》及《安魂曲》、羅西尼《榮耀彌撒曲》和《聖母悼歌》、泰利斯《寄願於主而無他》、威爾第《四首宗教歌曲》以外,還包括馬勒第二交響曲《復活》、馬丁《雙合唱團彌撒曲》、帕特《信經》、普朗克《榮耀頌》、普勞林斯《里加彌撒曲》、普羅高菲夫《亞歷山大.湼夫斯基》、拉赫曼尼洛夫《鐘聲》及史特拉汶斯基《詩篇交響曲》等。
他曾擔任艾德敦、馬捷爾、瑞琳、譚盾、迪華特及梵志登的合唱指導;並在莫札特《唐‧喬望尼》、普契尼《波希米亞生涯》、《賈尼.斯基基》、《杜蘭朵》及威爾第《阿依達》等歌劇擔任助理指揮。
