Raymond Leung was born with congenital deafness in the right ear. He began percussion studies in 1979 with Christine Philip (former Principal Timpanist of the HK Phil) and Jeffrey Pantric (former percussionist of the HK Phil). In 1985 he continued his studies into Western percussion at the School of Music of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) with Dr Lung Heung-wing, graduating in 1989 and joining the HK Phil as percussionist in the same year.
Besides his activities as a percussion performer, he is also an instructor at the HKAPA, the Chinese University and the Baptist University. He has spent several summers overseas studying classical percussion, African drumming, Brazilian percussion as well as steel drum performance, construction and tuning, in Canada, Hawaii, West Virginia University (US), Chicago, Australia, Senegal and Gambia, West Africa.
He is co-founder and Chairman of the ethnic drumming group "Island Sun Drum", founder of the True Light Girls' College Percussion Marching Band, founder of Po Leung Kuk Stanley Ho Sau Nam Primary School Steel Band, founder of Methodist school Percussion Band, founder of Ping Shek Catholic Primary School Percussion Band, and co-founder and Chairman of the Hong Kong Percussion Quartet – JENGA, as well as a number of school percussion bands in Hong Kong.
先天右耳失聰的梁偉華在一個沒有音樂背景的貧窮家庭長大。他自1979年開始隨香港管弦樂團兩位前首席樂師紀思定(首席定音鼓)及彭智輝(首席敲擊樂器)學習。1985年,他考進香港演藝學院修讀西方敲擊樂,師從龍向榮博士,至1989年畢業。他於同年加入港樂,成為樂團的敲擊樂樂師。
除了敲擊樂演奏外,梁偉華亦是香港演藝學院、香港中文大學和香港浸會大學的敲擊樂導師。他經常利用夏天樂團休演的時段到世界各地進修,內容包括古典敲擊樂、非洲鼓樂、巴西敲擊樂,鋼鼓演奏、製作和和調音,足跡遍及加拿大、夏威夷、美國西弗吉尼亞大學、芝加哥、澳洲、塞內加爾、西非岡比亞等地。
梁偉華分別是非洲鼓樂組合Island Sun Drum及擊樂四重奏JENGA之聯合創辦人暨主席,同時亦創辦了真光女書院敲擊樂步操樂團、保良局何壽南小學鋼鼓樂隊、循道學校敲擊樂隊、坪石天主教小學敲擊樂隊,以及香港其他學校的敲擊樂隊。
